The Inner Sky and the Outer World: Waking/Walking Alchemy

The Alchemical Process that is said to take place in the alembic, the vessel in which disparate contents are brought together, and integrated – leading toward the revelation of the “philosopher’s stone, (the ultimate substance-state of human experience)” offers more than a metaphor for psychic integration and wholeness. When combined with knowledge of the “inner sky” – the astrological glyphs and notations that correspond to psycho-physical processes – a living alchemy is revealed through the very interactions of one’s daily life in which everything becomes profoundly meaningful.

This “walking alchemy” is neither romantic nor sentimental: it is as much of a disciplined practice as sitting on a meditation cushion is. Instead of taking one out into a particular “state” or off on an abstract tangent, however, the practice of walking/waking alchemy reveals the sublime within the heart of the mundane and reunifies us into the “One” without sacrificing “difference” or splitting off into some ego-imagined place of enlightenment.

The imagined duality between the “one and the many” or between “God and the world” cannot be bridged by “methods” that ultimately retreat from the here and now. Walking/waking Alchemy is the yoga of the moment, the most serious journey of attuning to skillfulness in every thought, word, and deed. And the astrological glyphs are a language that allows for insight into the process of the quotidian challenging us to move deeper and deeper onto the only path we can walk on.
